Gameboy
Lately, I've been reaching for more tangible, analog experiences.
Interfaces that feel tactile, like softly pressing your thumbs on a handheld gameboy as it powers on, its screen flickering a warm glow.
I think much of how we interact with devices tends to privilege vision over all the other senses. But if you look at a well-designed game, it shifts this by going further — games invite us into a world of their own, and tap into how things sound, feel, and respond.
There's a sense of magic your fingers wield when you hold onto a miniature gameboy. Your hands wrap around the creation of a new world, past worlds tucked away in memory and many future worlds waiting to be played.
Leaning into this direction, I wanted to reimagine the photos app as a gameboy, where videos in your camera roll become explorable game worlds you can move around in. Drag-and-drop a video to play!
I believe sound design should rule the next era of software, so I wanted to have some fun here! Sound on if you also adore the nostalgic clicks of gamepads :-)
